Miami (January 14, 2026) – A total of 21 media organizations from 12 Latin American countries have been selected for the implementation phase of the AI Product Lab, a program of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) supported by the Google News Initiative (GNI). Aimed at fostering innovation and the application of artificial intelligence in newsrooms, this key phase will allow participating organizations to move from idea design to the technical implementation of AI-based solutions focused on strengthening sustainability and editorial development in the region.

“The AI Product Lab represents a decisive step for Latin American media to move from interest in Artificial Intelligence to its concrete and strategic application. Thanks to the sustained support of Google News Initiative, this program not only drives technological innovation but also strengthens the ability of media organizations to develop products, optimize processes, and build sustainable models in an increasingly challenging environment,” said the IAPA Executive Director Carlos Lauría.

The purpose of the AI Product Lab is to strengthen the strategic capabilities of participating media outlets. The core focus of the program, designed and implemented by consultancy Marktube, is to accelerate innovation in content creation, digital product development, operational efficiency, and business model growth through the adoption of a product mindset and practical AI applications.

Tangible Support for the Region

For this implementation phase, selected media outlets receive funding to execute their projects. The program serves a diverse cohort across 12 key markets: Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

“At Google, our commitment to the news industry in Latin America is firm. We are deeply excited to see the innovation and proposals emerging from media organizations across the region through the AI Product Lab. These initiatives, which seek to apply Artificial Intelligence strategically, will not only optimize newsrooms and strengthen business models, but most importantly will have a significant and positive impact on how Latin American audiences access relevant, high-quality information, driving editorial development and sustainability in the region,” shared Alejandra Brambila, News Partner Manager at Google.

A Precise Diagnosis for Real Solutions

Advancing to this execution phase is the result of a deep learning process in which media outlets not only trained in technological tools, but also adopted a product-centered working methodology.

Among the most significant findings of the lab was the identification of three common challenges in the region: fatigue in editorial workflows due to repetitive tasks, the existence of vast historical archives that remain inactive assets, and the need to reduce distance from audiences through effective personalization.

Through applied design workshops, teams moved from a list of operational “pain points” to defining a single strategic problem, internally validated and technically feasible to solve using Artificial Intelligence.

“The true value of the AI Product Lab lies in the concrete creation of installed capabilities and in adopting a product vision that allows media organizations to turn Artificial Intelligence into a strategic ally for sustainability. We are seeing organizations of different sizes and levels of digital maturity optimize their newsrooms and, most importantly, rediscover new ways to connect with their communities in relevant and efficient ways,” said Ezequiel Arbusti, Director of Marktube Group.

Four Solution Verticals for the Future

Projects funded in this implementation phase fall into four solution verticals designed to generate real impact:

  • Newsroom copilots: The dominant trend, focused on delegating editorial “craft” tasks to AI, including tools for correction and automated versions, writing assistants for drafts, and mass transcription systems.
  • Intelligent retrieval and querying: Technologies designed to interact with documentary archives, enabling journalists to instantly obtain context and connections from their own historical files.
  • Audience engagement and recommendation: Systems that profile readers to deliver relevant content.
  • Specialized applications: Solutions aimed at optimizing specific business units.

The project development phase will run through early April 2026. The program will formally conclude with a final session to share results and lessons learned, where key findings and standout solutions will be presented.

This joint effort seeks to consolidate a regional collaboration network, enabling participating media organizations to move beyond the use of isolated tools and lead transformation in their respective markets with a long-term vision.
