DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WHEREAS the Chamber of Deputies is considering a bill which would set harsher penalties for libel than those established in the 1962 Press Law currently in effect these reforms are a means of intimidating the free practice of journalism it has been reported that the government intends to turn the newspaper El Siglo into an ofticial gazette, a matter of concern for Dominican journalists there has been no official gazette in the Dominican Republic since the overthrow of the Rafael Trujillo dictatorship in 1961, and no one has missed it THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES to draw the attention of the National Congress of the Dominican Republic to the threat to the free practice of journalism contained in amendments in a bill submitted by opposition legislator Enmanuel Esquea Guerrero so that it vote against the bill to ask the government of President Leonel Fernández to confirm that El Siglo will not be turned into an official gazette.
