WHEREAS in 2008 Luís Agustín González, director of the newspaper Cundinamaca Democrática of the municipality of Fusagasugá, Cundinamarca, published an editorial entitled NO MORE!! which questioned the candidacy to the Senate of the ex governor of Cundinamarca, Leonor Serrano de Camargo:
WHEREAS the former governor charged the author of the editorial criminally because she considered the statements contained in it as damaging to her honor and good name, causing her serious moral and material harm
WHEREAS the municipal criminal judge, in a lower-level decision, convicted González of the crimes of slander and aggravated libel, sentencing him to 20 months in prison and payment of a fine equivalent to 20 legal monthly minimum wages

to call attention to the seriousness for freedom of expression that such decisions have
to exhort the judge at the second level to apply in his decision rigorous application of the provisions of the rules of Colombian and inter American jurisprudence that protect freedom of opinion concerning the right to good name of those who practice public political activities.
