Except for one episode of direct aggression against a journalist while covering the news, the practice of journalism went on without major setbacks during this period.
In October, journalist Dulce Glorían García Robles suffered injuries to her face when she was hit with a revolver by a police officer while covering a protest by newscasters in San Pedro de Macoris province, during the curfew due to the pandemic.
In another incident, Nerys Aguilar - police department commander for the tourist area of Boca Chica - prohibited the producer of local Canal 3, Marcelino Celedonio and other journalists, from working during the hours of restricted circulation. Later, the police headquarters dismissed the commander and ratified the freedom of journalists to work.
President Luis Abinader - who inaugurated his mandate in August 2020 - signed in October the Chapultepec and Salta Declarations - promising to respect press freedom. He has reiterated this commitment in meetings with editors of print and digital newspapers, television producers, and reporters from different media.
