On Wednesday, June 14, the well-known Guatemalan journalist, José Rubén Zamora, was sentenced to six years and a fine of 300,000 quetzals (more than 38,000 US dollars) for money laundering. The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) condemned the ruling and criticized the lack of independence of Guatemala's judicial system.

In Peru, Flavio Cruz, spokesman for the political party Peru Libre, supported the "gag law," which increases penalties for defamation crimes. Cruz also accused journalism of "gagging" the population and politicians.
