WHEREAS that stigmatization, used by rulers and public officials, as well as leaders of different ideologies, seeks to disqualify and undermine the credibility of journalists and media outlets that reveal facts of public interest
WHEREAS that this semester, cases of stigmatization against the press and journalists were recorded in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua and Venezuela
WHEREAS that stigmatizing and hostile discourse against critical and independent journalism is taken up and amplified on social networks, inciting misogynistic messages against women journalists and smear campaigns and violence that often result in direct attacks
WHEREAS the Declaration of Chapultepec, in its sixth article, states: "The media and journalists should not be discriminated against or favored because of what they write or say."
THE 80TH IAPA GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLVES
To urge governments and politicians to stop the practices of disqualification and stigmatization against journalists and the media
To insist that stigmatization is a form of apology for violence that deepens the levels of intolerance, divisions, and polarization in society
To urge the governments of the Americas to ensure that public debate is conducted in a climate of tolerance, respect, and within international standards of freedom of expression.
