MEXICO WHEREAS • from March to October of this year four journalists were murdered, one was kidnapped and intimidated, two were fired for reporting on an electoral dispute, a television station was shut down, a newspaper was vandalized and a journalist's office was searched • there continue to be many reports of subtle yet effective government censorship • the National Commission for Human Rights of Mexico is carrying out a concrete protection program for journalists THE 47th GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES • to call upon the government of Mexico to press forward with its expressed intention to improve the general human rights situation, and to bring an end once and for all to the appalling violations of human and journalistic rights • to exhort the Mexican government to carry out its expressed intentions to improve the human rights situation and to put an end to the deplorable violations against journalists of these rights • to send a message of support to the National Commission of Human Rights of Mexico for its program for journalists, asking it to speed up investigations and to give recommendations for the quick solution of cases of murders and other attacks against journalists.
