Miami (February 26, 2026) – The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) opens the call for proposals to participate in the 14th International Meeting of the Latin American Council for Accreditation of Journalism and Communication Education (CLAEP), to be held from May 13–15 at Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia.
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly transforming journalistic practices, information ecosystems, and civic participation. This scenario presents professional, regulatory, and educational challenges that require rigorous and multidisciplinary academic reflection. The 14th CLAEP Meeting is conceived as a key space for analysis and collective knowledge-building.
The general purpose of this summit is to critically examine the evolution of journalism in the face of AI and its impact on democracy, integrating theoretical, ethical, and applied perspectives.
Specific objectives include: examining ethical and professional challenges arising from AI use in journalism; analyzing AI’s impact on the production, circulation, and consumption of information in digital environments; reflecting on automation’s implications for public opinion and civic participation; generating academic contributions for teaching and research within Universidad del Norte and other accredited faculties; and fostering active student participation.
The Executive Directorate of CLAEP, together with the event organizers, have invited participants to focus their proposals on the following areas of study:
- LT1. Journalistic ethics, disinformation, and information integrity: analysis of the impact of AI on production and amplification of disinformation, as well as the ethical dilemmas arising from its use in journalistic practice. The responsibility of media organizations in ensuring transparency, managing bias, and overseeing algorithmic decision-making will be assessed.
- LT2. Artificial intelligence, public opinion, and digital democracy: study of the impact of these technologies on the shaping of public opinion and democratic processes.
- LT3. Artificial intelligence, automation, and technological advances: exploration of transformations in formats, narratives, and production processes, along with their implications for information quality and professional training.
- LT4. Regulation, digital governance, and freedom of the press: analysis of regulatory frameworks associated with the use of AI in the media and their direct impact on digital rights.
- LT5. Generative AI, new narratives, and content: evaluation of the impact of generative AI on the creation of communication content in different formats, exploring its aesthetic innovations, expressive possibilities, and ethical challenges.
- LT6. Transformation of the journalism industry: review of the structural, technological, and economic changes within the industry in the digital ecosystem, including sustainability challenges.
The call is open to journalists, media representatives, news agencies, community media, researchers, and academics. Proposals will be accepted until March 15, and results will be announced on April 1. A book of proceedings will be published following the meeting. The deadline to submit full papers for publication is June 30.
